This case is a great example of the more complex esthetic procedures performed at our office. Today's patient came to us with discoloration and decalcification on their anterior teeth. Additionally, their left lateral incisor (the lightest colored tooth in the before pictures) had an existing crown over a root canal. It had a poor long term prognosis and could not endure any more trauma. With this in mind, Dr. Kari created a set of five veneers that restored symmetry to the patient's teeth while incorporating the esthetics of the previous crown. The result is a more natural and youthful smile that does not compromise the existing dental work. A true win-win!

Take a look at this beautiful transformation performed at our office! In the before pictures, notice how the biting surfaces of this patient's anterior (front) teeth are worn down and uneven. Flattened and discolored teeth create an older appearing smile, regardless of age. The new veneers allowed Dr. Hong to develop a uniform and well rounded smile, while correcting the tooth shade. The results are absolutely stunning! If you would like to know more about veneers or any other cosmetic services offered at our office, please let us know!
In many cases, veneers provide a drastic change to the the teeth and smile appearance. This patient was no exception, where cosmetic veneers were used in conjunction with a full Invisalign treatment. By removing a small amount of tooth structure, Dr. Hong created room for a set of lithium disilicate veneers to be placed on the four front incisors. These veneers corrected for irregularities in tooth shape, size and dimension. They also allowed her to develop a more robust and youthful profile by adding contour to the front of the teeth. The overall effect is instantly noticeable and we are very happy with the results! If you would like to know more about veneers or would like to schedule a consultation with our office, please give us a call!
Thousand Oaks Family Dentistry Before and After - Upper Front Four Teeth Veneers
For many patients, cosmetic veneers are a great way to transform their smile with a short turnaround time. This patient is a grandmother who always wanted to close the gaps in her front teeth. Using veneers, we will both close the gaps and create a beautiful and natural looking smile. We just finished the first part of her treatment, where we prepared her four front teeth, took impressions and made the temporary veneers. She will return in about two weeks to cement the final product!

After
The "after" photo shows our patient in acrylic temporary veneers. They are created immediately following the preparation to hold space for the permanent restoration. Right now, our dental lab is working on the permanent veneers, making sure they have the right color, shape and opacity to match the rest of her teeth. We are eagerly awaiting the final product and will post as soon as we deliver it!
Check out this great orthodontic treatment that we just finished! Today's patient came to us with some mild crowding and misplacement of their top and bottom teeth. After an exam and consultation, we determined that their orthodontic concerns could be addressed using Invisalign clear braces. Through a series of special trays and "buttons" (small attachments made from filling material that allow the trays to grip the teeth), we perfected this patient's smile without any visible braces. This is only one of the many great Invisalign transformations done at our office. If you would like to know more about Invisalign, who is eligible or how the process works, please give us a call!
Every day, our office sees patients with a wide variety of restorative needs, each of which we try to match on an individual basis. Today's patient came to us with decay in their second premolar that structurally compromised the tooth. Radiographs revealed that there was not enough healthy enamel/dentin left to do a traditional filling or crown, so we had to consider other treatment possibilities. After reviewing options with the patient, it was decided that the tooth should be extracted and replaced with an implant by one of our specialists.
After the implant was placed and healed, we took impressions to make a custom mounting for the final crown (called an abutment). Since the second premolar is far back in the mouth, we had our lab create a gold abutment matched to a porcelain and metal crown. This combination of materials allowed us to create a crown that was both durable and beautiful without risking damage to the opposing teeth. The patient gets all the structural benefits of a metal crown, but with no metal showing. Careful planning provided us with great results; both our office and the patient were ecstatic with the outcome!
Overall, dental implant cases typically take about 8 months from start to finish. The vast majority of this time is spent making sure the implant is healed correctly and properly integrated into bone. In the meantime, there are numerous other considerations and adjustments needed: the appearance of the surrounding gum tissue, the color/shade of the crown and even the shape/material of the underlying abutment. If you are interested in an having a dental implant placed or are just curious about what goes into making an implant, please feel free to call our office! We are always happy to walk you through any of our procedures!
Take a look at one of our recent smile transformations! This patient came to our office with concerns about the esthetics of their anterior incisors. Wear to the incisal edges (biting surfaces) had created a "flat and sharp" appearance that takes away from the naturally contoured look teeth typically have. By using zirconia veneers, our office restored dimension and shape to the incisal edges and facial profiles of the lateral and central incisors. This allowed us to give the teeth a more youthful look and create a universally lighter shade. If you would like to know more about this process or other esthetic services we offer, please contact our office!
One of the biggest developments in modern dentistry is the introduction of laser technology in the treatment of patients. 50 years ago, the idea alone would have sounded like something out of a sci-fi movie. But today, lasers have many applications in the maintenance of the teeth and gums, along with promising outlooks for the future. In our office, we use lasers for a number of treatments and want to show you why they are safe and effective dental instruments!
At it’s very core, a laser is specially concentrated beam of light that produces a small pinpoint of energy. Depending on the type of material used to create the laser beam, the energy can be optimized to cut a number of materials. For this reason, lasers have long been used in precision manufacturing for making extremely accurate cuts. In dentistry, these properties allow us to use lasers in a variety of procedures, often with less time and tissue damage involved.
The most common application of lasers in dentistry is the removal or recontouring of gum tissue. In treatments where the gums need to be adjusted, a dentist would classically utilize a sharp instrument like a scalpel. While these did a great job of cutting tissue, they would induce considerable bleeding and inflammation. Lasers match the cutting abilities of standard instruments, but also stimulate healthier healing patterns from your immune system. Because the laser “seals” the tissue as it cuts, there is less trauma to the gum tissue and shorter healing times.
At our office, we particularly capitalize on the incredible healing properties of lasers in restoring dental implants. After an implant is placed and has healed in bone, it needs to be “revealed” by cutting away any gum tissue that would interfere with attaching the crown. Traditionally, we would need one appointment to trim the gums and a second appointment to allow them time to heal before taking impressions for the lab. However, our laser system allows us to reveal the implant and take impressions in the same appointment, as the gums will heal right away with minimal inflammation.
Beyond soft tissue adjustment, lasers are utilized to provide a number of dental services, ranging from stimulating periodontal attachment to removing tooth decay. Research has also shown that lasers hold even more applications for the future. Currently, experts are working on developing a system called selective ablation, where hard tooth structure is treated by a laser that only removes demineralized areas. Although this technology is still in development, it promises a new form of extremely conservative cavity removal, as only decayed tooth will be affected by the laser.
The field of laser dentistry is still new and evolving. Likewise, information and products are being introduced to the market at a rapid pace. As with all new technologies, our office likes to evaluate the research and clinical results before incorporating them into our patient treatment. If you would like to know more about dental lasers, the types of lasers we use or why we use them, please give us a call. We pride ourselves in being knowledgeable in all the current topics in dentistry and dental services!
Welcome to The Dental Library Review! In this feature, we will be reviewing and highlighting different children’s books we have collected at our office. Our staff have personally used these books with their own children and have had great reception. Today, we will be going over Just Going to the Dentist by Mercer Mayer.
This story is written and illustrated in the familiar style of Mayer’s “Little Critter” series. In this book, Little Critter goes in for his first dental appointment. Although the setting of the dental office was a little strange and uncomfortable, he has a very good experience. His exam, X-rays and filling didn’t hurt him at all, and he even got a treat when it was over. Little Critter quickly learned that dental appointments weren’t scary at all, just tiresome!
Our office recommends this book because it can introduce some of the more intimidating aspects of the dental office before your child’s appointment. Throughout the story, Little Critter encounters many different parts of a dental visit, only to find them fun or (at the worst) uneventful. Even the dreaded “shot” was shown to be nothing but a small inconvenience. If your child has had a bad experience at a medical or dental office, this book will show them that it can be fun and easy!
Given the large illustrations and simple words, we would recommend this book as an early reader or a great bedtime story. As with all the stories we review, feel free to check it out at your next appointment. We are always happy to do anything we can to get your family excited and educated about dental health topics!
